Vancouvers Verdienste liegen besonders in der kartographischen Erfassung und Beschreibung der Nordwestküste Nordamerikas von San Francisco nordwärts einschließlich Kanadas u. Alaskas. Die Kupfer der Textbände zeigen Ansichten, die des Atlasbandes Küstenprofile. Unter den großen Karten die siebenteilige Kte. der nordamerikanischen Nordwestküste (= Kte. 4-10; s. Kershaw 1193-1195). - Text unbeschnitten u. nur vereinzelt gering stockfleckig, leicht wasserrandig oder fleckig; Bde. 2 u. 3 gegen Ende mit Wurmspur im weißen Rand. Der mit Titel u. Tafelverzeichnis bedruckte Doppelbogen zum Atlas etwas gebräunt u. angestaubt sowie vorn mit hinterlegtem Einriß. Die Karten u. Taf. in den Rändern meist gebräunt oder stockfleckig u. mit mehreren, sauber hinterlegten Einrissen. 3 text vols. in 4to and atlas in large folio. First French edition. With 17 engraved plates & 1 engr. map in the text vols. and 10 double-page engr. maps & 6 engr. plates in the atlas. "This is one of the most important voyages ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge ... This work ranks with the voyages of Cook and La Pérouse among the most important of the 18th and 19th centuries" (Cox). "Vancouver finally proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that there was no western entrance to a Northwest Passage ... In many places, Vancouver's maps were not surpassed for a hundred years" (Hayes, p. 165.). - Text uncut and only slightly foxed and some waterstained or spotted, some traces of worming at the end of vols. 2 & 3. The double leaf with title and list of plates somewhat browned and duststained, restored tear to title. Marginal browning and foxing to maps and plates, some restored tears. Contemp. boards (text, worn) and loose plates in a double leaf with printed title and list of plates (atlas).
