Macedonis expeditio, Ortelius A., anno 1603 Copperengraving, edited by Abraham Ortelius, latin edition anno 1603, "ALEXANDRI MAGNI MACEDONIS EXPEDITIO." "IOVIS AMMONIS ORACULUM" Plate size 364 x 464 mm., contemporary coloured, cracked on margins, the surface of the map is in good condition. Reference vdB, Nr. 222: "numerous classical authors, specificalli Archelaus, Diogenes, Laertius, Plinius, Ptolemy, Diodorus, Plutarchus and Livius. The inset shows the oracle of Jupiter Amman, supposedly situated in present day Libya, where Alexander went to ask what would be the result of his expedition. He also expressed the desire to be buried there, but was eventually buried in Alexandria in Egypt. Ortelius derives his information on the oracle from Lucretius, Solinias, Ovidius, Lucanus and many others. He complains that more attention is paid by classical authors to Alexanders personal habits than to the regions and territories he conquered."
